It's OK to seek therapy!!

As I was scrolling my social media page this morning, I ran across something interesting. I saw a post that read, "Black girl, it's okay to seek therapy". I didn't see many responses back to the author of the post, but it made me reflect on my profession and community as a whole.

As a Life Coach, on average, I see LESS Black clients than any other race. I also see more women than men. I have acquaintances who are also Black Mental Health professionals and share this same conundrum.

So why as a community do "we" Black people NOT seek counseling, therapy, life coaching, etc? Is it perhaps not just a "Black" thing, but a human thing? Who do you think seeks professional help more? Men or women, and why?

Weigh in #movers. I want to know your thoughts on this..

That's wonderful! I definitely think the unbiased opinion and judgment free space is necessary for mental health

I think the black community believes that by seeking therapy it means that something is wrong with you or they are some how broken. I have been to therapy and it has helped me grow in so many areas. I think it is benefical to be able to vent and have non biased opinion

I was talking to a few church members this past week and we discussed something similar to this. Many of them mentioned that their parents were old school and instilled in them that "what happens in this house stays in this house". I think saying something like that for however many years you're living at home could definitely prompt someone to believe they shouldn't share any feelings with a peofessional. I'm so glad that you're attending regularly! Way to break the stereotype!

Good morning!

I agree with you! Many African American people think that therapy is unethical. Which is totally FALSE! As for me, I attend regularly and it’s the best thing for me! I am always advocating for others to go to therapy! Great read
